Introduction

Choosing the perfect lighting for your home involves more than just picking a pretty fixture. From technical specifications to installation requirements, there’s a lot to consider. At minihouzz, we’ve gathered the most frequently asked questions from our customers and created this comprehensive FAQ guide to help you make informed decisions.

🛒 Shopping & Selection

Q: How do I determine the right size pendant light for my space?

A: For pendant lights over a dining table or kitchen island, aim for a fixture that’s about one-third the width of the surface below. For example, a 36-inch wide table pairs well with a 12-inch wide pendant (or two 8-inch pendants spaced evenly). Hang pendants 30-36 inches above the table surface.

Q: What’s the ideal height for wall sconces?

A: Wall sconces should be mounted at eye level — typically 60-66 inches from the floor to the center of the fixture. In hallways, space sconces 8-10 feet apart for even lighting. In bathrooms, mount sconces at 60 inches on either side of the mirror for flattering facial lighting.

Q: Should I match all my light fixtures in the same style?

A: Not necessarily. Mixing styles creates visual interest as long as there’s a unifying element — common finish (e.g., all matte black), similar design language, or complementary shapes. A curated mix feels intentional and designer-driven.

💡 Technical Questions

Q: What’s the difference between pendant lights and chandeliers?

A: While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, pendant lights typically have a single shade and provide focused task lighting. Chandeliers have multiple arms or tiers and offer 360° ambient illumination. Pendants are ideal over islands; chandeliers shine over dining tables and in entryways.

Q: How does bulb shape affect light output?

A: Bulb shape determines light direction and dispersion. Globe bulbs (G-series) provide 360° light and are great for pendants. Candle bulbs (B-series) create a decorative effect in chandeliers. Reflector bulbs (R/BR-series) direct light forward, perfect for recessed and track lighting.

🔧 Installation & Safety

Q: Do wall sconces need to be hardwired?

A: Not necessarily. Plug-in wall sconces are a popular alternative — they mount to the wall and plug into a standard outlet. This is ideal for renters or anyone who wants to avoid electrical work. Many come with cord covers that match the fixture finish for a clean look.

Q: Can I install a dimmer switch with any fixture?

A: The fixture must be labeled as dimmable. Even then, you need a compatible dimmer switch. LEDs require special dimmers designed for low-wattage loads. We recommend checking compatibility before purchasing.

💰 Value & Care

Q: Are designer lighting fixtures worth the investment?

A: Designer fixtures use higher-quality materials (solid brass vs. plated steel, hand-blown glass vs. pressed), feature better craftsmanship, and offer unique designs you won’t find everywhere. They also hold their value better if you ever sell your home.

Q: How do I maintain my designer light fixtures?

A: Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth is usually sufficient. For glass components, use a mixture of water and mild dish soap. Avoid abrasive cleaners that can damage finishes. Have wired connections inspected every few years by a qualified electrician.
